CLOSING RECEPTION: The Peter Miller Story

  • Morton Contemporary 129 South 13th Street Philadelphia, PA, 19107 United States (map)

Born Henrietta Myers in 1913, the artist known as Peter Miller graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) in 1934. In an effort to ensure fair evaluation of her artwork, Henrietta changed her name to Peter, believing her art would be more positively received when attributed to a male creator. Miller's extraordinary 250-piece estate was discovered in a Catskills barn during 2020 COVID, then painstakingly restored by former Princeton University conservator Paul Gratz, and now the collection is on view in Peter Miller's home city at Morton Contemporary Gallery. Peter's works demonstrate a remarkable talent unprecedented in the early years of the American Modernist movement.  An heiress, philanthropist, deep spiritualist, master tarot card reader, and an unofficial member of a Puebla tribe, Peter channels a soulful brilliance of glowing color that inflames her canvases.
