Amy Ritter, Hidden in Place: The Journey of the American Dream

GRIZZLY Grizzly is pleased to announce HIDDEN IN PLACE: The Journey of the American Dream, a solo exhibition by Amy Ritter. In this new installation of sound and photography Ritter lets you peer into the mobile home park where she grew up and where her father continues to live. She investigates the American Dream and what that means to the generation of low-income working-class people.

The gallery will feature Li’l Wolf 6, part of Ritter’s MH Window Series, showcasing the guarded world of mobile home residents. Her images reveal communities strategically placed on city outskirts, exposing challenges like surveillance and stigmas. This full wall installation will mirror a series of three homes, Hidden in Place, that have shrubs and trees shielding them, blocking them from the public’s eye. These photographs echo how residents feel trapped by rent increases, the inability to move their homes, and unlawful evictions. The back wall becomes a centerpiece of the space where the insecurities that haunt Ritter’s father flicker across the projector and TV screen. But, unlike the details of his home’s exterior, they remain partly hidden from view. Viewers are asked to project onto Ritter’s father their own baggage about the American Dream. Seen through his daughter’s (Amy's) lens, he becomes a window into the psyche of an entire generation, leaving us with the question: “How do we restore the dignity of those who get left behind?”
