Lyn Godley

Merging Art, Technology, and Science

About Lyn Godley

As a female artist, having worked for over three decades within the male-dominated fields of Industrial Design and now Arts and Technology, Godley explores the relationship between art, technology, and human reaction. Her fearless commitment to learning new technologies and processes and stepping into unfamiliar territories, whether coding or scientific research, to deepen her investigation of artmaking and its impact on the viewer has kept her at the forefront of design and arts for over 35 years. From individually programmed LEDs that create animated imagery to paintings overlaid with animation through projection mapping to large-scale public art installations, she creates layered environments that play with themes of dynamic imagery, immersive observation, and user behavior. She says the natural world is dynamic in nature, constantly changing, and she attempts to portray that energy, bringing imagery to life through a variety of dynamic lighting technologies to create a deeper conversation by creating an immersive engagement with the viewer and what that engagement provides – whether to calm, heighten focus, or excite.

In her newest bodies of work on view at Scotts Mills Gallery Godley use the manipulation of watercolors and oil paint as a backdrop for animation via projection mapping, bringing dynamic life to the work.
